In a month when many families and friends spend time together at home, we thought it would be a good idea to provide a few safety reminders and tips for preventing accidents. While you don’t have to spend your time worrying that something bad will happen inside your home, it is still a good idea to remain alert to possible dangers that could result in an accident. So, here are a few basic suggestions:
Do you have a fireplace? If so, be sure to take down anything from the surrounding area that could easily ignite. Before lighting the fire, you should also double-check that the flue is open.
Candles and string lights make the house feel cozy and warm, but they can also become a fire hazard if you are not careful. Never leave lit candles unattended in a room or close to flammable objects. You should also check string lights for broken bulbs, frayed wires, or other signs of wear and tear.

When was the last time you tested your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms? Remember, these devices are only effective when they are working properly, so it may be a good time to check them.
If you are having small children over, take some time to go through your home to ensure no dangerous objects are lying around that could cause them harm. Even some plants like poinsettias are poisonous, so keep them away from children and pets.
Remaining alert to the potential for accident and injury will help to keep your home and household safe this month.
