Lowering our household costs can be a real challenge, particularly if we have already done a lot to cut down on our spending. Electricity is typically a major household expense – the good news, however, is that with just a few small adjustments you can significantly lower this cost. Here are some ways you can reduce your electricity costs:
When you are not using it, switch off your computer. If you need to keep it on, then try to at least turn off the monitor. If you can choose between using a laptop or a desktop computer, the laptop will use a lot less electricity, so it’s worth using it whenever possible.
Laptop and cell phone chargers etc use electricity even when they are not connected to your electronics, so you may want to think about unplugging them when they are not being used.
When the time comes to replace older appliances and electronics, select devices that are ENERGY STAR rated – this will have a big impact on energy consumption and will help to save you money.
Look at the position of your refrigerator and freezer. If it is positioned near the stove, a heat vent, or the dishwasher, it will need to use more energy to keep cool. Even direct sunlight will affect its energy efficiency.
